SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead but fell 2-1 at Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon at The Cage.
- The Gators (2-6-1/0-4 CCAA) are on a five-game skid. The 0-4 conference start is the program's slowest since starting 0-3 in 2014.
- The Cougars (4-4-2/3-2 CCAA) outshot the Gators 19-9(10-5).
- CSUSM also outshot SF State 5-3.
SF State took the lead in the 21st minute on Carly Ortega's second goal of the season. The Gators intercepted a Cougars free kick. Kylie Schneider played the ball up the right side and across the box onto the left side. Glory Smith played the ball back towards the net and Ortega split the defense for the finish.
In the 31st minute, Cal State San Marcos put the ball in the back of the net off of a corner kick from the right side but the goal was waived off. However, the Gators were whistled for a foul in the boxand Briana Daoust converted the attempt to tie it at 1-1.
Another set piece proved costly late in the match. Jessica Harloe connected with Daoust on a free kick and Daoust headed the ball in to give the Cougars the lead with just over three minutes remaining.
After not playing the Gators' previous two matches, Sommer Harrington returned to the goal box. She made eight saves and allowed a pair of goals. Yesenia Betancourt made four stops for the Cougars.
The Gators will wrap up the trip with a match at No. 2 UC San Diego on Sunday, October 13. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
