SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team won its fifth consecutive match on Friday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Stanislaus State in the Gators' home opener at Cox Stadium.
- SF State's (5-1/2-0 CCAA) five-match win streak matches the program's longest win streak, set in 2015 and 2017.
- The Gators dominated possession and outshot the Warriors (3-5/0-3 CCAA) 10-5(5-2). The Gators also held a 5-2 corner kick advantage.
- Both yellow cards issued were to Gators (Miles Burditt and Gustav Fink)
The Gators jumped out to the early lead in the 21st minute on Ramiro Palencia's third goal of the season, off of the assist by Seiya Otsuka. The Gators played the ball from their defensive end and down the left side. Otsuka got the ball in the middle of the box and drew the defense, leaving a wide-open Palencia.
The lead held into the first half. Stanislaus State tied it in the 63rd minute when Joseph Mayorca connected with Miguel Galdamez. The Warriors played from their goal up the right side and a ball from Stan State's defensive end carried into the box. Galdamez played a through-ball and Mayorca collected the ball and slipped past the defense for the score.
Just two minutes later though, San Francisco State regained the lead for good. A costly Warriors foul in the box set up a penalty kick and
Jonathan Orozco and the senior buried it in the back of the net.
San Francisco State's Peter Swinkels allowed the one goal but stopped the only other shot he faced. Justin Motzkus made three saves and allowed both Gator goals.
"I'm proud of the team for a strong performance against a good Stanislaus State team. We played a beautiful first half and executed our game plan by controlling the ball and tempo of the game and thought we were unlucky to go into the half 1-0. Stanislaus State did a good job by putting us under pressure in the second half and once again we dug in and responded with a game-winning goal." — Head Coach Pedro Osório.
