SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team slipped to 2-0 in CCAA play with a tough 2-1 loss to Stanislaus State on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
The Gators opened CCAA play on Sunday, kicking off arguably their toughest stretch of the season, with their first three conference matches against teams in the mix for the Top 25. SF State (2-3-1/0-1 CCAA) was outshot 21-4(12-3) by first-place Sonoma State (6-2/2-0 CCAA). SSU also held a 7-0 corner kick advantage.
- After winning back-to-back matches, the Gators (2-4-1/0-2 CCAA) have dropped their last three.
- Despite the three-game losing streak, SF State has been outscored just 12-10, though they've been outshot 90-68. Opponents also have a 27-16 corner kick advantage and the Warriors (7-1/2-1 CCAA) had a 2-0 advantage on Friday.
- SF State, which was issued two of the three yellow cards in Friday's match, have been much more aggressive. The Gators have been whistled for 62 fouls compared to 33 for opponents.
- With Flores' goal, SF State has now had five different goal scorers in seven matches.
The Warriors struck first with a goal in the seventh minute. A throw in from the right side was played into Ilena Rivera, who crossed the ball to forward Selia Torres, who fired from near the top of the box for the early lead.
At the 14-minute mark, Daesha Harper settled the ball just past the mid line, dribbled a few yards, and played a ball into the box. Goalkeeper Alyssa Herrmann was unable to corral the ball and Alyna Flores was there on the left side of the goal to record her first career goal.
The match stayed knotted until the 31st minute when Rivera dished her second assist of the day, a long ball towards the box. Sadie Ortiz caught San Francisco State goalkeeper
Hayley Garriott too far out of the box and put it into an empty net for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
The Warriors kept the pressure on in the second half. Rivera had a shot hit off the frame and Garriott made a pair of saves in the 56th and 64th minutes. SF State had a pair of opportunities in the 63rd and 69th minutes but both attempts were off frame. Another shot went wide in the 79th minute off the foot of
Karla Ramos, and an offsides in the 82nd minute erased another chance to score. The Gators' best chance to tie it came in the 86th minute but
Glory Smith would up and hit it too strong and high for a Warriors goal kick.
Garriott made three saves and allowed a pair of goals in her first start for the Gators. Herman made one save and allowed the one goal.
The Gators will look to bounce back on Sunday, October 6 when they host Chico State at 2 p.m. Live video will be available on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter and Instagram at @sfstate_wsoc.
