POMONA, Calif. — The No. 20-ranked San Francisco State baseball team opened its four-game series at Cal Poly Pomona with an 8-2 victory on Friday night behind a strong performance from starter Jeff Piver.
- The Gators improved to 10-0-1 and 8-0 in CCAA play. CPP fell to 11-12 overall and 9-8 in CCAA play.
- Seven Gators sport a batting average .333 or higher.
- Four Gators had two-hit performances, led by Collin Gabel's 2-for-3 night with a run and an RBI. He leads the team with a .588 batting average.
- Six different Gators recorded an RBI, led by eight by Harley Lopez. His second-inning home run was his team-leading fifth of the year.
- The Gators were 3-for-4 on stolen bases.
- Joshua Romero made his team-leading seventh appearance on the mound.
- The Gators went up 2-0 in the first. Jackson Kritsch led the game off with a walk and quickly scored on Lopez's doubled to right field. Lopez moved up 90 feet on a fly ball, then scored on Riley Cleary's single through the left side. In the bottom half of the inning, Piver allowed a leadoff double and Ryon Knowles' double cut the lead to 2-1.
- The Gators broke things open in the second. With Gabel on second, Kritsch sent a two-out triple to right field to make it 3-1. Lopez followed by clearing the fence in right field to make it 5-1. The Broncos got a run back thanks to a two-out rally.
- In the sixth, Shaq Robinson tripled and scored on Jonah Gonzales' single back up the middle. Gonzales stole second and Jason Hare sent a two-out double to left center to make it 7-2.
- A pair of singles set up a Gabel sac fly in the eighth for another insurance run.
- Piver (1-0) struck out five and scattered a pair of runs over six innings of work en route to his first decision of the season.
- Sebastian Selway started the seventh inning with a flyout before allowing a single through the right side. He got another flyout, then Head Coach Tony Schifano turned to Romero.
- Romero was credited with two and a third innings of work, though he never threw a pitch in the seventh thanks to a pickoff off of Angel Ortiz. Romero pitched scoreless eight and ninth innings to lower his ERA to 1.23.
- Broncos starter Tim Holdgrafer lasted five and two thirds innings. He allowed seven runs on 10 hits. Drew Atherton faced one batter for an out and Jeremy Taylor went the final three innings, allowing one run on two hits.
