LOS ANGELES — The No. 17 San Francisco State baseball team got off to a shaky start on Friday night in the series opener at Cal State LA, a 9-3 loss at Reedy Field.
- Friday night marked the first time this season that the Gators (14-4-1/12-4 CCAA) have lost back-to-back games.
- Trevor Rogers was the one bright spot for the Gators. He drove in all three of the Gators' runs and raised his average 24 points to .313.
- The Golden Gators turned four double plays, three of which got SF State out of the inning. They've now turned 21 this season.
- SF State committed four errors on Friday. The Gators haven't gone without an error since game one of a March 3 doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos.
- The Gators' .942 fielding percentage is the lowest in the CCAA. Cal State LA (13-13/12-10 CCAA) is just ahead of the Gators at .950.
- No. 8 UC San Diego lost 3-0 to Chico State so the Gators remain in first place.
- Jeff Piver's first pitch of the second ining hit Jordan Myrow, then Piver balked. Myrow moved up 90 feet on a groundout, then scored on what should've been a groundout. Instead, it was the Gators' first error of the game, which allowed Nate Alam to reach base. Michael Tillman followed with a double down the left field line and Harley Lopez couldn't come up with the ball cleanly near the tarp. Lopez was charged with an error and Alam scored.
- The Gators loaded the bases in the third with one out. Trevor Rogers delivered a sac fly to cut the lead to 2-1 but the Gators stranded a pair in scoring position.
- SF State turned a 463 double play in the third but went down in order in the fourth and fifth.
- Cal State LA added three runs in the fourth, two of which were unearned after an infield error. The Golden Eagles chased Piver in the fifth with Noe Garcia's RBI single. Jenkins entered and threw one pitch and got a double play ball to limit the damage.
- In the sixth inning, Cleary led off with a single up the middle and Rogers sent an 0-2 pitch to the opposite field for an RBI double.
- Cal State LA scored on the Gators' second balk of the game in the seventh and plated three runs in the inning, another of which was unearned.
- In the eighth inning, Brady Dorn singled and advanced on a passed ball. He scored on Rogers' one-out single to right.
- Piver (2-1) gave up a season-high 11 hits and didn't make it out of the fifth. He allowed six runs but just three were earned.
- Nate Jenkins allowed three runs, two earned, over two and a third innings.
- Caden Childress allowed one hit over one and a third scoreless innings of work.
- Micah Hee (5-0) allowed two runs, on earned, over six innings for the Golden Eagles. Austin Nazabal allowed an unearned run in a three-inning save.
