SAN FRANCISCO - After clinching the eight-seed on the final day of the regular season on Saturday, the San Francisco State women's basketball team travels south to battle top seed and the second-ranked team in the nation UC San Diego on Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m.
The postseason appearance is the first for SF State since 2013 and fifth appearance since 2008. SF State squared off against the Tritons in the first round of the CCAA Tournament in 2008, being edged out 59-56 by UC San Diego while serving as the seven seed.
"This is the time of the year that every college basketball player dreams of playing in," said Head Coach Natasha Smith. "It's March, and it's pure madness because it's all about straight-up competing, not X's & O's. Earning the opportunity to compete in the postseason is gratifying, but we said back in September that we want more. So we're hoping that we can band together to shock the world."
The Gators took the conference by storm this season, ranking sixth in the CCAA with 65.7 points-per-game while also ranking fifth with a 39.2 field goal percentage. Their 31.7 three-point field goal percentage is the third best in the CCAA and are led by freshman Isabella Lamonea, whose 1.9 three-pointers per game is the seventh-best in the conference. Senior Jhaina Stephens is shooting 50.7 percent from the field for the second-straight season, and that mark is the fifth-highest in the CCAA while her 14.7 points are also the fifth most.
Toni Edwards' 123 assists are the most by a Gator since the 2001-02 season, and her 4.7 assists per game are the 35th-most in the nation.
The Gators and Tritons squared off on February 23 in SF State's final regular season home contest of the season. The Gators rolled out of the gates early to go up 14-11 and held UC San Diego to just three field goals in the first five minutes. SF State will look to earn their first victory over the Tritons since 2013 (12 contests).
