TURLOCK, Calif. — The Gators got a solid showing from reliever Luis Salinas after he was pressed into action early but the San Francisco State baseball team's offense was held silent in the series opener at Stanislaus State, a 7-2 loss.
The Gators find themselves with their back against the walls, as the CCAA's third-place club stands a mere .004 percentage points ahead of the host Warriors. Friday was also a missed opportunity to gain ground as both teams above the Gators, No. 2 UC San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay, lost their Friday openers as well.
- SF State is the No. 5 ranked team in the official NCAA Division II West Region poll.
- The Gators have now lost four of their last five series openers.
- Trevor Rogers' homer in the second inning was the 27th of the year for the Gators, tied for third-most in the CCAA.
- The Gators entered the game leading the nation in double plays turned (1.09) but the only double play turned was by the Warriors, an inning-ending 4-3-2 in the third.
- SF State is 1-3 in night games this season.
- SF State spotted the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first. Braeden Oki and Brandon De La Guardia singled. A Grant Bunker groundout plated a run and Jack Large singled in another.
- Rogers got the Gators on the board in the second with a homer to right, his fifth of the year.
- The Gators left them loaded in the fourth. Jonah Gonzales hit a two-out single in the seventh but was caught stealing to end the inning.
- Stan State posted a run in the seventh and blew it open with a four-run eighth.
- Brady Dorn's pinch-hit single in the eighth plated Riley Cleary, who led the inning off with an infield single.
- Jack Higgins (5-3) allowed a pair of runs in the first, then left as a precaution with an out in the second when he came off the mound funny.
- Higgins' injury forced Head Coach Tony Schifano to head to the bullpen much earlier than he would have liked. However, Luis Salinas rose to the task. He retired 11 of the first 12 batters that he faced but was charged with a run in the eighth. He struck out three and surrendered four hits in five innings of work, his longest outing of the season. He kept the Gators in the game and also lowered his ERA nearly three and a half runs.
- After a fielding error and a Salinas balk, Nate Jenkins came on with one out in the eighth. Oki stole third, then scored on a De La Guardia single back up the middle before Jenkins got out of the inning.
- Luke Genova allowed three runs without recording an out and Sebastian Selway allowed a run in an inning of work.
- Chase Wheatcroft (5-2) continued a strong season for the Warriors. He scattered seven hits and allowed one run in seven innings of work. Matt Pulos worked the final two innings and allowed a run in the ninth.
The series continues on Saturday, April 27 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Be sure to follow San Francisco State baseball on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook at @sfstatebaseball.
