IRVINE, California - The historic San Francisco State softball season came to an end on Friday as they Gators fell in the NCAA West Regional. SF State dropped the opener to host No. 9 Concordia - Irvine, 5-3, before falling in its second contest of the day in a tight pitchers duel to Western Oregon, 1-0.
- The Gators had the daunting task of going up against the PacWest Pitcher of the Year Callie Nunes in game one and faired well against the All-American. Nina Revoir took her deep in the fourth with a two-run shot to left to give SF State a 2-1 lead. Katelyn Sturm also went yard with a solo home run in the seventh.
- It's the fourth time this season the Gators have hit multiple home runs in a game.
- SF State faced another tough hurler in Middle Mayer in game two as they only mustered three hits, which came off the bats of Hayey Nunes, Samantha Alvarez and Sydney Jenkins.
- Karla Soto wrapped up her incredible Gator career tossing all six innings of game two, allowing just one earned. The senior has 27 career wins, which is the tenth-most in program history.
SF State took the nation by storm this year, ranking amongst the elite in hits, batting average, and runs per game. The 39 wins are the most since 2006, and the Gators set the program record in runs, hits, RBI, steals and doubles. Brylynn Vallejos was named to the National Player of the Year Watch List, and was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year in addition to the All-CCAA First Team while also setting a new program record for batting average at a .442 clip. Revoir and Michelle Castro garnered Second Team honors, and Emily Mitchell and Vallejos took home D2CCA All-West Region accolades. The Purple and Gold were the fourth-ranked team in the West Region, and were receiving votes in the NFCA National Poll.
GAME ONE
- A RBI single by Kretschmar put the Eagles up 1-0 in the second.
- In the fourth, Nunes was hit by a pitch, and two batters later Revoir took the 2-2 pitch over the fence in left-center for the first Gator hit of the day and the one-run lead.
- The hosts utilized a two-out rally in the sixth to regain the lead. Lieng hit a two-run home run to left to make it 3-2, and Kretschmar beat out a bunt single. She then scored on Thorpe's double, and Thorpe quickly scored on Lopez's double to make it a 5-2 advantage.
- SF State battled back in the seventh as Sturm hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season to left that cut it to two. After a Lehua DeLeon double, the Gators had the tying run at the plate but Nunes was able to get out of the jam with a pop-up and a strikeout.
- Emily Mitchell tossed 5.2 innings and held Concordia - Irvine to no earned and two hits through five innings. Soto pitched 0.1 in relief.
GAME TWO
- It took until the seventh inning for someone to get on the board, and the Wolves started things off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a Gator miscue. Coy got the game-winning RBI base hit up the middle to send Western Oregon to the West Regional Final.
- Soto kept SF State in the game throughout and developed a rhythm by retiring the Wolves in order in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
