SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team won its home opener, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon over Academy of Art. The Gators used three second-half goals to secure their first victory of the season.
The Gators (1-1-1) had plenty of opportunities in the first half but failed to find the back of the net. SF State attempted nine shots, six of which were on goal, and suffocated the ART U offense to just one shot in the first 45 minutes. SF State held a 7-1 corner kick advantage for the match.
Katelyn Patterson's goal in the 60th minute broke the seal and got the offense going. Matilda Cassel Ledin played a ball into the top of the box to Patterson, who spun and finished left footed past her defender to the far post for the early lead.
Just moments later, the Gators doubled the lead.
Kylie Schneider intercepted a ball near the midfield, then played a ball ahead to Patterson, who tracked it down and finished far post again to make it 2-0.
The Urban Knights (2-1-0) scored on Anissa Wilson's free kick in the 67th minute that bounced in past the near post from the top of the box. Scheinder added a goal of her own in the 87th minute when
Sydney Yuen played a ball into the box from the left side. The ball pinballed around the box and off the goalkeeper before Schneider finished from the front right of the goal.
SF State goalkeeper Sommer Harrington made one save and picked up the first win of her career. Urban Knights goalkeeper Lara Pflicke made a season-high eight saves.
"This was a Great team win! We played our game and created chances from multiple people. I'm proud of our game and am looking forward to building our momentum," — First-year Head Coach Brittany Cameron, who earned her first career win on Wednesday.
