SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State volleyball team was handed its first CCAA loss on Saturday as they fell to UC San Diego, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22)
- The loss snaps SF State's (8-3/1-1 CCAA) seven-match win streak, which is the longest streak since 2009. It is also the first home loss for the Gators this season and in the last 11 matches dating back to last season.
- Trinity Barr followed her 21-kill performance last night with an 11-kill night and also hit .450 to lead SF State in both categories.
- Bailey Johnson added five kills while Drew Morris had seven and eight digs. Taylor Garcia also reeled in eight digs.Â
Barr picked up where she left off 24 hours ago with a booming kill to the back line that tied it up, 2-2. A Jessica Haynie klll from the left side followed by two Triton (8-2/2-0 CCAA) errors put the hosts up 8-4. UC San Diego battled back to score the next five points to regain the one-point lead on Claudia Mathew's kill that just clipped the sideline. The rally continued following the Gator timeout as they now lead by five, 13-8. Barr ended another Triton surge with a cross-court kill that narrowed the deficit to eight. Trailing 23-12, SF State inched closer following more Triton attack errors, but Gina Cortesi recorded a kill right in front of the SF State back line to secure the early match lead.Â
Morris and Johnson came up with a big block to stuff the Triton hitter for the 3-1 lead. Tied 5-5, UC San Diego scored the next four featuring a pair of aces by Susanna Limb before a service error ended the run. Haynie's swing followed by a pair of Triton attack errors cut it to one, 11-10, and back-to-back Garcia aces down the stretch put the hosts up 14-13. After another visitor run, Morris tied it late, 20-20 off a dish from Payton Jensen. However once again the Tritons bounced back to push their lead to 24-21 and ran away with the win for the 2-0 match lead
A Marlena Billings swing to the back corner put the Gators on the board in the third. Down 13-9, Johnson went cross court to cut it to three, and Billings made it a three-point contest again at 15-12. SF State battled back to keep within striking distance of the visitors, with Morris getting a point off the block that cut it to 20-17 and followed with an ace. A Haynie swing to the back made it a one-point deficit, 21-20, and a Triton rotation error leveled it 21-all. UC San Diego responded with the next three points for the 24-21 lead, and grabbed the sweep 25-22 to hand SF State its first home loss of the season.
