ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team followed up an overtime win with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon. The win was the fourth straight for the Gators, who open up 1-0 in CCAA play after having Wednesday's match at Humboldt State postponed as a result of a flash flood.
- SF State's (4-1/1-0 CCAA) four-match win streak is the most since 2017. That season's team started the season on a five-match win streak and won its final three regular-season matches and a first-round conference playoff match.
- Sonoma State (2-4-1/1-1 CCAA) outshot the Gators 9-7(6-4) and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
- Five yellow cards were issued in the match, three to Gators (Ramiro Palencia, Kasper Tindbaek, and Seiya Otsuka)
In the 11th minute, San Francisco State goalkeeper Peter Swinkels smothered a ball but a foul in the box by defender Kasper Tindbaek set up a penalty kick for the Seawolves. Sean Rohane converted the PK to give SSU an early 1-0 lead, a lead which they took into halftime.
The Gators knotted the match in the 68th minute on a ball from Jonathan Orozco to Seiya Otsuka that was later ruled as an own goal.
With less than a minute remaining, a Seawolves foul just past the midfield set up a Gators free kick.
Jonathan Orozco played the ball to the right side to
Feliciano Cardenas, who chipped it in from outside the box into Tindbaek, who headed the ball. SSU goalkeeper Derik Engebretsen deflected the ball but
London Lombana was there at the goal line to send in his first career goal, the game-winner
Swinkels allowed the penalty kick early but stopped all six other balls that came his way. Engebretsen allowed two goals and made a pair of saves for the Seawolves.
"I have to tip my hat to Sonoma State. They are a very dynamic team and showed it in the first half. We were able to regroup at halftime and I felt like from there we completely took the game over. We've showed time and time again how strong we are mentally and once again, we dug deep to score twice late for the win. Every week, we're getting stronger and stronger and we hope to carry this momentum into our first home match!" — Head Coach Pedro Osório.
