ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped its CCAA opener, 2-0 to No. 25 Sonoma State, on Sunday afternoon.
The Gators opened CCAA play on Sunday, kicking off arguably their toughest stretch of the season, with their first three conference matches against teams in the mix for the Top 25. SF State (2-3-1/0-1 CCAA) was outshot 21-4(12-3) by first-place Sonoma State (6-2/2-0 CCAA). SSU also held a 7-0 corner kick advantage.
The Seawolves threatened early with a shot in the sixth minute that Sommer Harrington saved. In the eighth minute, Harrington came out and left the goal open but the SSU shot went wide left. SSU's Madison Watts got within close range in the 11th minute but her shot went wide left. The Seawolves got deep into the box with about a minute and a half left in the half but Karla Ramos was able to clear the ball and eliminate the threat to keep it scoreless at the half.
Harrington had another nice play in the 62nd minute when she beat Sam Layman to the ball by diving in front of the right goalpost to snuff out another SSU opportunity. However, the Sewawolves wore down the Gators defense. In the 68th minute, Kamryn Haiber passed ahead to Molly Murphy, who settled the ball at the right edge of the box and chipped it to the far post just out of the reach of a leaping Harrington. The Gators countered quickly but goalkeeper Ashley Morton laid on it at the other end and sent it back to the midfield. In the 72nd minute, Sonoma State doubled its lead on Madidson Watts' goal.
The Seawolves had a free kick near the top of the box in the 78th minute but Harrington made yet another save.
Niko Baila fired a shot in the 79th minute but it was saved by Morton.
Harrington posted a career-high 10 saves, including six in the first half, but allowed the pair of second-half goals. Harrington gave way to Hayley Garriott, who played the final 12 minutes in goal and did not face a shot. Morton made three saves and recorded the shutout for the Seawolves.
The Gators return home, where they'll host No. 17 Stanislaus State on Friday, October 4 at 3 p.m. Live video will be available on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter and Instagram at @sfstate_wsoc.
