DENVER — The San Francisco State women's soccer team endured a lengthy lightning delay in Denver on Friday afternoon. The Gators eventually got in their season opener at Regis but saw the contest cut short by 20 minutes and settled for a 1-1 70-minute draw.
Overall, the Gators (0-0-1) were outshot 9-7 by Regis (0-0-1) but held a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Regis held a 6-2 corner kick advantage but the Gators defense held the line.
Once play finally began, the Gators came out firing.
Glory Smith's shot in the ninth minute was saved, as was
Katelyn Patterson's shot in the 17th minute. Regis' Molly Kratzer fired a pair of shots but neither was on frame. Then, in the 38th minute, SF State goalkeeper
Sommer Harrington made a save on Emily Ramos' shot but was unable to clear the ball, as Ramos tapped the ball to Carly Bych for the early Rangers lead.
In the 57th minute, SF State broke through. Matilda Cassel Ledin scored unassisted to score the equalizer. Julia Hagedorn had a pair of back-to-back shots before time was called. With lightning having delayed the contest, the match was called after 70 complete minutes.
"We played well and created some good chances against a good opponent," said first-year Head Coach Brittany Cameron. "Today was a well-rounded team performance to kick the season off."
The Gators have another match on Sunday, September 8 when they head to Golden, Colorado to face No. 15 Colorado Mines. That match is slated to start at noon MT / 11 a.m. PDT. Updates will be available at
