SAN FRANCISCO — The No. 25 San Francisco State wrestling team split a pair of duals on Friday afternoon inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators defeated No. 19 Chadron State 27-15 and came up short, 25-20, to No. 11 Adams State.
The Gators found themselves in early holes all day due to not cutting weight at 125 pounds. However, that didn't slow the Gators versus Chadron State as the Gators win streak grew to six. At 133 pounds, No. 10
Nathan Cervantez edged No. 9 Brandon Kile 7-5 in a bout of nationally-ranked 133-pounders.
Alex Felix followed with a decision at 141 pounds that tied the match 6-6. At 149 pounds,
Mason Boutain gave the Gators the lead for good with a fall in 2:08.
No. 12
Maxamillian Schneider followed with a fall of No. 7 Chase Clasen in just 39 seconds.
The Eagles picked up a decision at 165 pounds but
Maleselino Salt kept the Gators in front with a decision at 174 pounds thanks to a late takedown and four-point near fall. No. 5
Justin Pichedwatana earned the Gators' third fall of the match at 184 pounds.
197-pounder
Kevin Mulligan, in his first bout of the season, forced overtime with No. 6 Wade French but suffered a takedown in the extra period. The Eagles picked up the heavyweight bout with a 5-2 decision.
Against the No. 11 Grizzlies, the forfeit at 125 pounds loomed large. Cervantez was injured early on versus No. 4 Jonathan Adreatta but finished the bout, suffering a major decision. Felix was injured as well, falling by injury default to No. 3 Noah Hermosillo, and had to be carried off the mat by Assistant Coach
Ryan Loder. Boutain got the Gators on the board with a major decision over No. 6 Josiah Rider and Schneider continued his dominance with another fall in less than a minute.
Adams State picked up decisions in the 165 and 174 bouts before Pichedwatana recorded a major decision to keep the Gators' hopes alive. However, Cole Gustavson's decision at 197 pounds secured the victory for the Grizzlies. Ramos scored a fall in 1:29 but that only got the Gators within five points of ASU.
