SAN FRANCISCO —The San Francisco State baseball team suffered its first home loss of the season on Saturday in a 7-3 loss to visiting Cal Poly Pomona at Maloney Field.
- The Gators (13-7/7-7 CCAA) are now 10-1 at home.
- Trevor Rogers went 4-for-5 with an RBI and had the first four-hit game of his career. He had half of the Gators' eight hits.
- The Broncos' (12-7/10-4 CCAA) nine hits came from four players with multi-hit games. All four of those batters are in the top part of the lineup. The bottom part of the order went 0-for-14.
- Through their first 18 games, the Gators had only struck out 10 times in three different games. In the two games so far in the series, the Gators have struck out 25 times, including 10 on Saturday.
- The game, originally scheduled as a doubleheader, was made a single game with a first pitch time of 2:15 p.m.
- The Broncos struck first. Ryon Knowles led off with a double and later scored on Brennan McKenzie's sacrifice fly to right center.
- SF State took a 2-1 lead in the second. Rudy Aguilar snapped an 0-for-10 skid with an RBI single to right field and Jonah Gonzales singled through the left side.
- However, the Broncos regained the lead in the third and never looked back. Drew Cowley plated a run with a single up the middle in the third. The Gators limited the damage to one run thanks to catcher Jason Hare, who caught Cowley attempting to steal second.
- SF State went quietly in the third and fourth, then gave up another run in the fifth. A throwing error allowed Knowles to reach and take second. He scored easily on Cesar Lopez's RBI double, which ended SF State starter Jordyn Eglite's day.
- McKenzie hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
- The Broncos added a run in the ninth on a Cowley sacrifice fly.
- Rogers doubled home Kevin Page all the way from first in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.
- Jordyn Eglite (2-1) allowed four runs in four and a third innings and was charged with his first loss.
- Jack Reitma threw a scoreless inning and two thirds.
- Theo Dopkins gave up the two-run homer but allowed just two hits in two innings of work.
- After appearing in just one game last season due to injury, Cameron Crone made his long-awaited 2020 debut. The senior did not allow a hit but surrendered a run in an inning of relief.
- Drew Atherton (3-0) allowed two runs but struck out eight and left with the lead, giving him the eventual win.
- The Broncos bullpen combined for four innings of three-hit baseball.
The series will conclude on Sunday, March 8. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. and, time allowing, will follow with a seven-inning game slated for 1 p.m. doubleheader.
