SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team scored an early goal but fell 3-1 to Cal State LA in the two teams' CCAA opener on Friday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
- SF State falls to 4-4/0-1 CCAA while Cal State LA improves to 3-2-1/1-0 CCAA.
- The first half was more balanced with Cal State LA holding a 5-4 shot edge but the Golden Eagles controlled the second half and finished with a 15-8 shot advantage, including 9-4 on goal.
- Cal State LA also held a 6-2 corner kick advantage.
- Gustavo Ferrari, Markus Just, Adrian Medina, and Denis Vezina accounted for SF State's four shots on goal.
SF State got on the scoreboard first thanks to Denis Vezina's goal from the left side in the 14th minute.
The Gators looked to double the lead in the 38th minute with a penalty kick but
Gustavo Ferrari's shot was smothered by Cal State LA goalkeeper Alvaro Unanua. Less tha half a minute later, the Golden Eagles went on the attack and scored on Jeppe Paulsen's shot to the low left of the net.
The momentum remained with Cal State LA as the Golden Eagles took the lead in the 50th minute on a ball from Aiden Wait to Jose Orellana that went past SF State goalkeeper
Matias Herrera Fuentes on the near post to make it 2-1. With six seconds left, Simon Johansen came up with the loose ball and dished to David Elizaga, who found the back of the net for the late insurance goal.
Herrera Fuentes finished with six saves for the Gators in the loss. Unanua made three saves for Cal State LA.
SF State continues CCAA play on Sunday, October 3 with a 2 p.m. match versus No. 25 Cal Poly Pomona. Fans are permitted but are required to wear CDC-approved face coverings while in Athletics facilities and while indoors on the SF State campus.
