SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team moved back into the win column and up the standings into a tie for second place with a 2-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at Cox Stadium.
- The Gators improve to 5-6-1/3-1-1 CCAA while the Otters drop into a tie for fourth and to 5-3-3/2-2-1 CCAA.
- The Gators were outshot 7-6 but both teams attempted four shots on goal.
- The Gators had a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
- Carissa Capinpin netted her first career goal, the game-winner.
Cal State Monterey Bay started the scoring early with a goal in the seventh minute when Sierra Levy found the back of the net. The Gators answered back in the 14th minute when
Sydney Yuen played a ball from near the midfield to the top of the box that
AJ Tanner tracked down on the third bounce. She then sent a left-footer past the right post for the tie.
The Otters had an opportunity in the 28th minute with a free kick from the top of the box but Mitsy Ramirez pulled her shot left of the goal and the teams headed into the half knotted at 1-1. Three minutes into the second half, San Francisco State took the lead when Capinpin scored off a goalkeeper deflection.
"This is all a result of the players' hard work," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "They've done a great job of buying into the system and executing."
SF State goalkeeper Marcella Salyer made three saves. She currently has a .766 save percentage while her goals against average dropped to 1.17. Aubrey McKessy allowed two goals and made two saves in the loss.
The Gators head back out on the road to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, October 17.
