WSOC | Gators Keep Pace, Just Two Points Out of First Place

CARSON, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team held Cal State Dominguez Hills scoreless in a 1-0 Gators victory on Sunday afternoon at Toro Stadium.

  • The Gators improve to 6-6-1/4-1-1 CCAA while the Toros drop into a tie for fourth and to 4-8/1-5 CCAA.
  • SF State, picked to finish last in the CCAA in the preseason coaches poll, sits just two points out of first place after No. 13 Sonoma State was upset by Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-1 in overtime.
  • SF State remains tied for second place with Cal State East Bay, which won its match 1-0 at Humboldt State.
  • The Gators were outshot 20-11 and 8-7 shots on goal.
  • The Toros had a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

How They Scored
The two teams played a scoreless first half and the Gators got things going quickly in the second half thanks to a Toros miscue. The Toros played the ball back from near the midfield but a ball back to the goalkeeper was too high up and Flores sped in for the interception and the goal.

"We are literally growing up on the road. Two victories this week – to get the full points – is massive," said Head Coach John DeMartini, who also celebrated his birthday on Sunday. "They played with such heart and determination. I'm super proud, this is an amazing group of young women."

SF State goalkeeper Marcella Salyer made six saves and faced a career-high 20 shots. She raised her save percentage to .792 while her goals against average dropped to 1.06. Alyssa Newman allowed the goal and also made six saves in the loss for the Toros.
