SAN FRANCISCO — The fog rolled heavy into Cox Stadium on Friday afternoon and the San Francisco State men's soccer team, appropriately wearing their grey jerseys, cruised to a 3-0 victory over their cross-bay CCAA rival, Cal State East Bay.
- The Gators improve to 5-8-3/1-5-3 CCAA while the last-place Pioneers fall to 2-12-1/1-8 CCAA.
- Gustavo Ferrari scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season. The first tied him with Pete Mangini, who set the program record with 13 goals in a season in 1980. Ferrari broke the record later in the day with his second goal. Ferrari leads all CCAA players and is averaging .875 goals per match. He entered play ranked 12th in the nation in total goals and 10th in total points.
- The Gators outshot HSU 12-7, including 9-2 shots on goal. The nine shots on goal tie a season-high.
- Both teams attempted five corner kicks.
- The Gators swept the season series, outscoring the Pioneers 9-0 in two matches.
- Friday's win salvages a frustrating month of October for the Gators, who are 1-5-3 in the month with one match to go and two matches remaining in the season.
- The match was the team's Think Pink Day, part of the CCAA's month-long initiative to raise awareness around breast cancer.
The Gators wasted little time finding the back of the net. In just the third minute,
Adrian Medina dished to Ferrari for his first score of the day and what turned out to be the game-winner.
Adrian Medina added an insurance goal in the 70th minute with a golazo. The goal was his third of the season, tying him for second on the team behind Ferrari.
In the 78th minute, Ferrari took a pass from
Samuel Twigg and proceeded to break a program record that has stood for 41 years.
"It was great to see the team respond from a heartbreaking road trip. We have a lot of fight left in us and we showed that today." said Head Coach Pedro Osório. "We're all proud of Gustavo and his record but I know he would trade that, in a heartbeat, for a chance to play in the playoffs. We will continue to build and improve and make sure we are back in the postseason next year, where we belong."
Jo Krumsvik played the first half for SF State while senior Erik Ornelas tended net in the second half. Each SF State goalkeeper made one save. Jack Landreth made six saves in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
The Gators host Stanislaus State on Sunday, October 31 in a 2 p.m. Halloween matchup. The match will be broadcast live on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter at @sfstate_msoc.
