SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State volleyball added two more to the win column on Friday with sweeps of Holy Names and Academy of Art in the first day of the Gator/Seawolf Classic. The Gators beat the Hawks in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14. The sweep of Academy of Art was closer, 25-20, 27-25, 25-19.
- The Gators are now 5-0 on the season, surpassing the four-match win streak the program set in 2018. On Saturday, the Gators will eye a program record set in 1997, when the team won its first six matches of the season.
- The team's .519 hitting percentage versus Holy Names set a program mark for the highest in a single match.
- Trinity Barr's .800 hitting (12 kills on 15 attempts) in the first match of the day versus Holy Names puts her second all-time for hitting percentage in a single match. Assistant coach Bailey Johnson holds that record, having hit .824 in 2017, also against the Hawks.
- Barr had 25 kills in the two matches and finished the day with a season-high 13 over ART U.
- Jessica Haynie had 14 kills on .419 hitting versus Holy Names and accounted for 16.5 points.
- Brianna DeBoer placed a career-high five service aces, which ties her for ninth in a single match. She added two more in the nightcap.
- Drew Morris had a double-double versus ART U with 11 kills and 13 digs.
SF State wasted no time, jumping out to a 4-0 lead versus Holy Names (1-4). A trio of Hawks errors and kills from Bekah Roth and Barr grew the lead to 9-3 and Izzy Isaak closed out the first set with a kill. Tied at 3-3 in the second set, SF State got another kill from Barr and one from setter Payton Jensen. Haynie and Roth followed suit, and a Brianna DeBoer ace grew the advantage to 8-3. A late 5-1 run closed out the second set. Strong service from Brianna DeBoer included a pair of service aces and the Gators led 5-2 to begin the third set. The Hawks tied it at 7-7 but a Chloe Henning block grew the Gators lead to five, 15-10. More strong service from Brianna DeBoer led to a 19-0 lead. Haynie recorded a kill, followed by a service ace of her own, and a pair of Hawks errors closed out the match.
The Urban Knights (2-4) came out with a 5-2 but the first set was tied midway through at 13-13. The Gators finished with an 8-3 run with all three Urban Knights points coming off of Gators errors. A couple more Gators errors gave ART U the lead in the second set. SF State came to within a point, 14-13. The Gators finally caught up and erased the deficit at 23-23. SF State staved off a couple of set points and three consecutive ART U attack errors finished off the second set. Tied 8-8 in the third set, the Gators tallied a 6-2 rally that swung the lead in their favor by five and the Gators cruised the rest of the way.
"We had a great offensive day, the offense was really clicking and we served well," said SF State Head Coach Matt Hoffman. "It's great to get two more wins to start the tournament. It's a quick turnaround for Saturday and we look forward to closing out non-conference play strong."
