SAN FRANCISCO — Within seconds of the start of overtime, Catherine Flores took a pass in the middle of the box and scored to give the SF State women's soccer team its first win of the season in front of a home crowd at Cox Stadium. SF State defeated Holy Names 2-1 to improve to 1-3 on the season. The Hawks fall to 0-2.
- The Gators were aggressive on offense and outshot the Hawks 25-9. Nine of those shots were on goal.
- In the previous three games combined, the Gators had recorded 23 shots
- Kylie Schneider recorded her fourth career assist with her assist on the game winner.
- The Gators also held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
- Saturday marked the first win for as John DeMartini as head coach of the Gators. The payoff was a long time coming, as DeMartini took over the program in 2020-21 and guided the program through a difficult season that was canceled due to the pandemic.
The Gators struck first and scored their first goal of the season when Katelyn Patterson found the back of the net in the sixth minute of the game. SF State continued to apply pressure on Holy Name's defense throughout the first half. Out of the 14 shots taken, four were on goal.
In the 48th minute of the game, Holy Name's Alyssa Acuna took a good pass by Kylie Tisdale and scored the equalizer to make it a 1-1 game. Patterson looked to reclaim the lead for the Gators with three of her second half shots on goal but all three were saved by the keeper.
The Gators started with possession in overtime. Within thirty seconds, SF State marched down the field and passes from Schneider and Patterson set Flores up for the game winner.
Iliana Gallegos made her first career start in the goal and recorded two saves. Sommer Harrington saw time in the goal for the first time in her career when she came in during the 61st minute.
"The hard work and determination and belief in each other showed today," said DeMartini. "Each game, we get better and become more confident."
SF State hosts Seattle Pacific on Thursday, September 16 at 3 p.m. Fans are permitted but are required to wear face coverings while in Athletics facilities and indoors on the SF State campus.
