HAYWARD, Calif. — After a week with no matches, the San Francisco State men's soccer team showed no signs of rust and dominated Cal State East Bay 6-0 in a nonconference match-up at Pioneer Stadium. SF State improves to 3-1 while Cal State East Bay falls to 1-3-1.
- Gustavo Ferrari had a hand in four goals and finished the game with three goals and an assist. This was the second game in a row Ferrari has scored multiple goals. Ranier Plantinos was the last player to score a hat trick when he scored three goals against Holy Names on September 8, 2017.
- In addition to Ferrari, Julio Gonzalez Ponce and Markus Just recorded assists. Just and Gonzalez Ponce registered assists for the first time this season.
- Ferrari's seven points in the game are tied for third all time. He also becomes the seventh player to score three or more goals in a game. Only Paul Mangini and Nick Psiol have scored more in a game.
- The last time the Gators scored six or more goals was when they defeated Humboldt State 7-1 on October 25, 2017.
- The Gators outshot the Pioneers 18-11 with nine of those shots on goal.
Ferrari looked to strike first and fast with a header within the first two minutes of the game, but the shot sailed to the right of the goal. Ferrari's second shot of the day found its way to the back of the net. Julio Gonzalez Ponce passed the ball to Ferrari and Ferrari showed off some impressive footwork to evade a defender and score at the 15-minute mark.
It took less than two minutes for the Gators to score their second goal of the game. Ferrari crossed the ball to
Denis Vezina and Vezina placed the ball in the net.
At the 20 minute mark, Ferrari scored his second goal of the game and shot the ball in the right side of the net to give the Gators a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Ferrari completed the hat trick in the 66
th minute of the game.
Two minutes later,
Ramiro Palencia got his own rebound and scored to increase the lead to 5-0.
Adrian Medina added to the stat sheet with a goal in the 73
rd minute.
The Gators recorded their third clean sheet in a row. Matias Herrera Fuentes earned his second start in the goal and recorded five saves in his second win. Erik Ornelas saw 17 minutes of action.
SF State hosts William Jessup on Wednesday, September 22 at 1 p.m. Fans are permitted but are required to wear CDC-approved face coverings while in Athletics facilities and while indoors on the SF State campus.
