ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team fell to Sonoma State 3-1 in a non-conference contest. The Seawolves scored quickly and the Gators were never able to come back from the early setback.
- The Gators fall to 2-5 while the Seawolves improve to 5-1.
- Freshman Rylie Velez scored her first career goal.
- Seawolves outshot the Gators 12-8.
- Sonoma State is ranked No. 14 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II Top 25 poll.
All of the scoring took place in the first half of the game. Less than two minutes into the game, Sonoma State's Julia Pritchard connected with Molly Murphy for the first goal of the game. Murphy would have a hand in the next goal and passed the ball to Lexi Zandonella-Arasa for the second goal of the game at the end of the 11 minute mark. Malia Falk scored the Seawolves third goal of the game at the 38 minute mark. A minute later, Rylie Velez put the Gators on the board with a goal that sailed in the right side of the net.
Goalkeeper Marcella Salyer played the first half and made two saves. Sommer Harrington came in during the second half and did not record any stats.
"We allowed the early goal and that set the tone a bit but I appreciate the energy and effort from the team," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "I was proud of our second half response and keeping a nationally-ranked team scoreless for 45 minutes."
The Gators return home and open conference action against Cal State LA on Friday, October 1. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. The match will be live on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
