SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's basketball team wrapped up a successful 4-1 homestand with a 67-42 win over Stanislaus State on Saturday at the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.
- The Gators (8-9/5-5 CCAA) sit in sixth place in the conference standings while Stanislaus State (4-9) is in last place at 1-7 in CCAA action.
- SF State scored 38 points in the paint, which also allowed them to get to the free throw, where the Gators scored 11 more points.
- Eche Okeke scored a game-high 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half, to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
- Toby Okwuokei added a dozen points with nine rebounds. Sean Orr added 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Jalen Chandler scored eight points and reeled in seven rebounds. Zebaniah Jackson scored six points and led all players with 11 rebounds.
- Marlon Short led the Warriors with 11 points and nine rebounds. Benno Zecic and Tony Singleton each added eight points apiece.
- Twice this week, the Gators held their opponent to less than 50 points.
Five minutes into action, with the game tied 7-7, Okeke scored a putback to put SF State up two. However, both teams went scorless over the next four and a half minutes. The Warriors tied the game with 11:25 to go but
Sean Orr scored the next four points to put SF State back in front and the Gators never trailed again. The lead stretched to 10 inside four minutes and SF State took a 31-21 advantage into the half. The Gators took advantage of a dozen first-half Warriors fouls while limiting them to nine field goals. In fact, the Warriors finished the game with two players (Singelton, Travion Williams) fouled out and three others with four fouls.
The Gators outscored the Warriors 36-21 in the second half, including the first six points of the half, on 53.8 percent shooting while limiting Stan State to 29.6 percent (8-of-27) in the half. The Gators grew the lead to as large as 28 and were able to empty the bench over the final four minutes.
Devon Jackson highlighted the final four minutes with four points, a rebound, and a steal.
"It is not easy to win a game comfortably in this league when you don't shoot it well but today we did that. This was an elite defensive effort by our group for the entire 40 minutes. We communicated and adjusted at a high level," said Head Coach Vince Inglima. "It is fun to watch when guys are really taking it personally on that end of the floor."
"I'm pleased that we went 4-1 on this homestand and we are looking forward to the second half of conference play."
