SAN MARCOS - The San Francisco State women's basketball team fell short of a come from behind victory over receiving votes Cal State San Marcos and fell 77-66 Thursday night at the Sports Center. Alexsandra Alvarado scored a career-high 28 points in the loss.
- Gators fall to 6-10 overall and 4-8 in the CCAA. Cal State San Marcos improves to 12-2 and 10-1 in the CCAA.
- Alvarado's previous career high was 13 points. The 28 points was the fourth most points scored in a single game in school history. Her three steals set a new career high and her five assists matched it.
- Ashley Hart added 13 points and Jolene Armendariz had 10.
- The Gators shot 40.4 percent from the field and 83.3 from the free-throw line.
- Giselle Mahinay recorded her first block of the season.
- The Gators had 28 rebounds compared to the Cougars' 38.
- Dynnah Buckner had 21 points for the Cougars.
The Gators were hot in the first quarter and shot 54.5 percent from the field. Alvarado made a pair of baskets and landed both baskets from the charity strip to help the Gators take an early lead. A 20-4 run put Cal State San Marcos back in front with a 32-20 lead and 5:09 left in the second quarter. The Cougars stretched the lead further and held a 41-25 lead heading into the locker room.
The Cougars scored the first basket in the third period but the Gators responded well and chipped away at the lead. SF State scored 30 points and went 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Samaria Velazquez scored a buzzer-beater three cut the lead to four points. The Gators stayed within one possession throughout the fourth quarter. A layup from Buckner gave the Cougars a 73-66 lead with 2:51 left in the game. Alvarado was charged with an offensive foul on the following possession and the Cougars scored again to go up by seven. The Gators were unable to land shots in the final two minutes to make up the deficit.
