VB | Gators Fall Just Short of Upset of #16 Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO – The San Francisco State volleyball team took #16 Cal State San Bernardino to the brink but ultimately fell 3-2, ending its season. After dropping set one 25-19, the Gators bounced back with two wins of scores of 28-26 and 25-19. The Yotes won set four 25-19 to force set five. The Gators, who reached match point in the final set, dropped it 19-17. SF State finished the regular season with the same conference record as Stanislaus State but due to a point-differential tie breaker, Stanislaus State secured the final spot in the conference tournament.

How It Happened

The Yotes went on a 5-0 run to take a 8-4, capitalizing on three Gator errors. Coming out of a gator time out, Velasquez landed a kill to end the run and an error brought the Gators back by two. But the Gators continued to have miscues as the Yotes had another 5-0 run to take a 13-6 lead and force the Gators to use their second timeout. The Gators made things interesting with four straight kills from Wilson at set point during a 5-0 run but an attack error by the Gators ended the run.

In a tight set two with 13 different ties, Rebecca Rendahl's kill got the Gators to set point at 24-23, but the Yotes responded with a kill to tie the match at 24-24. Down 26-25, three straight attack errors went the Gators' way to take the second set.

The momentum from set two carried itself into set three. Tied at 18 all, the Gators called a timeout. The Yotes would only register one more point the rest of the way as the Gators took the lead in the match with a set victory.

The Gators fell behind early in set four and trailed by as much as eight. SF State would come within five at set point off a kill by Rendahl but the Yotes responded with a kill to force a fifth set.

SF State reached match point up 14-12 in the final set, but San Bernardino registered two more points to tie the set up. The Gators were at set point again with a 17-16 lead, but a service error gave the Yotes the serve and San Beranrdino would score the next two points off a block and service ace.
