How it Happened

Gators got off to a hot start in the first quarter, playing well both defensively and offensively. SF State dominated the boards 13-7 while stealing the ball three times. Snipes had a pair of put back lay-ups for the Gators and Jolene Armendariz made all three shots at the line to put the Gators up 19-9 at the end of the quarter.

The offense stalled in the next frame as the team committed eight turnovers. The Nighthawks came back within a possession but a buzzer-beater three from Samaria Velazquez put the Gators up 28-23 before the end of the half. Lesa-Hardee had a hand in back-to-back scoring plays that put the Gators back up by double-digits with 4:55 left in the third. Foul calls against the Gators gave the Nighthawks a chance to come back and the Gators' lead was cut to 45-39 at the end of the fourth.

With the lead cut down to two with 2:02 left in fourth, the Gators made crucial plays within the following 20 seconds to give them the cushion they needed for the win. Talia Garner drove for a lay-up and hit the and-one shot. On the following possession, Mya Blake stole the ball and lobbed it to Velasquez to go up 54-47. The Nighthawks missed a three and turned the ball over on the next two possessions while the Gators went to the charity stripe and patted their lead.
