By the Numbers

  • SF State moves to 5-4 on the young season. Saint Martin's fell to 1-3 while the Yellowjackets dropped to 4-6.
  • The Gators racked up 18 hits vs. SMU, which matches the program's single-game record, followed by 11 more vs. MSUB.
  • SF State also swiped another dozen bases, including a season-high eight vs MSUB, bringing the team's season total to 47. The Gators had 74 through 27 games in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 2019, the Gators stole 129 bases in 59 games.
  • Kaitlyn Maddux earned the win in both games, bringing her season record to 2-3.
GAME ONE

How They Scored
  • A pair of walks led to a two-out double for Devyn Connolly that put the Saints up 2-0 in the first.
  • With two outs and nobody on, SF State loaded the bases in the top of the second but left them loaded. That appeared costly but the Gators struck for three runs and the lead in the third. The 1-2 punch of Brylynn Vallejos and Lehua DeLeon quickly made it 2-1. Halle Nugent followed with a two-run shot to left center that gave the Gators the lead for good.
  • In the fourth, Kai DeLeon and Vallejos recorded back-to-back hits, and Lehua DeLeon drove in her younger sister with a sac fly. Sydney Jenkins singled up the middle and Nugent launched her second homer of the game, a shot down the left field line.
  • In the sixth, an error extended the inning. Lexi Holihan singled home a run, pinch hitter Samantha Renteria drove in a run on a groundout, and Kai DeLeon singled home a pair.
  • Malia Pinder drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth for SMU but a 6-4-3 double play extinguished any Saints momentum and a fielder's choice two batters later ended the game.

  • Kelly Taylor faced four batters in a scoreless inning.
  • Abby Runyon (0-1) was chased in the third. She lasted two and a third innings and was charged with three runs. Chloe Leverington allowed four earned runs in an inning of work and Kylie Parsons allowed four runs, just one earned, in the final two and two thirds innings.
GAME TWO

How They Scored
  • An SF State fielding error opened the door for a two-run first inning for the Yellowjackets.
  • The Gators loaded the bases in the first two innings and finally converted in the third. Nugent and Holihan walked, and both moved up 60 feet on a sac bunt. Vincent singled home the Gators' first run, then stole second to move herself into scoring position. Kai DeLeon's fielder's choice scored Holihan and Vincent scored on a throwing error for SF State's first lead of the game.
  • Lehua DeLeon manufactured a run in the fourth. She singled, stole second, and scored with two outs thanks to a throwing error after she swiped third.
  • Kira Nilson led off the fifth with a double and later scored courtesy of a fielding error with two outs.
  • In the sixth, Lehua DeLeon created another run. She led off with a single, stole second, moved up on a fly ball, and scored on Holihan's two-out single.
  • Just six outs away, the Gators allowed four runs in the bottom of the sixth that tied the game at 6-6. Morgan Quimby singled home a run, a groundout plated another run, and Maycen O'Neal's two-run, two-out singled tied the game.
  • SF State bounced back in the seventh with a two-out rally. Kai DeLeon singled home Nilson, who reached on an error, and DeLeon later scored on a passed ball.
  • MSUB got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh but stranded a pair to end it.
