SAN FRANCISCO - Down 53-51 with seconds left in the game, Jolene Armendariz drilled a three and delivered a 54-53 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt at Main Gym at Don Nasser Plaza.
- Gators improve to 7-12 overall and 5-10 in the CCAA. Cal Poly Humboldt falls to 7-10 and 6-7 in the CCAA.
- Muirae Gomez led both teams with 18 points and added eight rebounds
- Ashley Hart had 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
- Gators went 40.0 percent from the field and 33.3 from three.
- Both teams turned the ball over 21 times.
- Maddison Perry had 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Lumberjacks.
A 6-0 lead for the Gators to start the game quickly vanished. Humboldt went 4-for-4 from the line to help take the lead and go up by nine at the end of the first quarter. The Lumberjacks opened the second quarter with a pair of made free throws to go up 18-7. Giselle Mahinay's jumper with less than a minute to go brought the Gators within four points. Mya Blake's three-pointer gave the Gators the first lead of the second half as they went 9-1 in less than two minutes of game time.
Humboldt reclaimed the lead in the third quarter but never led by more than two possessions. After the Lumberjacks used a couple of opportunities the line to take a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Gators forced turnovers to get right back in reach of the lead. With Humboldt up 52-51 with 15 seconds left, the Gators fouled Jadence Clifton to send her to the line. Clifton only made one of her shots and Armendariz's shot iced the game.
"This was definitely one of those games that gave off a March Madness feel," stated Head Cochh
Natasha Smith. "Both teams fought really hard for 40 minutes...so it was ugly at times. Muirae was consistent, Ashley was our ball of energy and at the end of the day, Mya and Jolene demonstrated exactly who they are, an elite point guard (Mya) and an elite shooter (Jolene)."
