HAYWARD — The San Francisco baseball team won a defensive battle with crosstown conference rival Cal State East Bay 2-1 Friday afternoon. Jordyn Eglite was one out away from throwing a complete game and a rally in the eighth gave the Gators just enough offense to win.
- SF State improves to 11-14 and 6-11 in CCAA action while Cal State East Bay falls to 10-13 and 3-10.
- The Gators did not relinquish a single extra base hit.
- AJ Schrader went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double.
- Daniel Santos went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
Defense shined for both teams Friday afternoon. The Gators and the Pioneers both turned a pair of double plays and made good infield stops to get the out. The Pioneers took the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly. Gators found some momentum after
Sammy Gonzales hit a double and the next two batters were hit by pitches. Mark Woinarowicz's day was done after loading the bases.
Michael Cunningham worked the count for an RBI walk and
Gavin Mancha hit a line drive to right field to give the Gators a 2-1 lead. Eglite struck out the first two batters he faced before giving up a hit and a walk.
Mario Vargas came in relief and got the out to seal the victory.
- Jordyn Eglite went his longest outing to date and pitched 8.2 innings to improve to 3-3. He threw five strikeouts, gave up three walks, nine hits and only one run.
- Mario Vargas came in relief of Eglite and retired the only batter he faced to earn his first save of the season.
- Mark Woinarowicz earned the loss for the Pioneers.
