BSB | Gators Split Double Header with Pioneers

HAYWARD — The San Francisco baseball team split a double header with Cal State East Bay Saturday afternoon. In game one, the Gators used an eight run sixth inning to take command of the game and win 14-4. The Gators fell 5-2 in game two, snapping a four game win streak.

  • SF State sits at 12-15 and 7-12 in CCAA action while Cal State East Bay sits at 11-14 and 4-11.
  • The Gators recorded a season high 11 walks in game one. Kody Gardner had a team high three.
  • The 14 runs scored in game one were the most scored in a conference game this season.
  • Alec Smith had a team high three RBIs in game one.

How It Happened Game 1



The Gator's scored first with a Sac fly from Sammy Gonzales in the third. After the Pioneers took the lead with a three-run fifth inning, the Gators scored eight runs in the sixth to take control of the game. SF State was extremely patient at the plate during the sixth inning and recorded five walks with two of those walks leading to runs. The Gators gave up a run off a home run in the bottom of the sixth but held the Pioneers scoreless the rest of the way while adding five more runs.

How It Happened Game 2



The Gators dug themselves into a hole early after giving up five runs in the first two innings. They got on the board in the fourth when Justin Clark hit a sac fly to bring in Daniel Santos. Tyler Franks' performance on the mound in the later innings kept the Gators in the game. With no outs in the top of the seventh, Richie Rios blasted a homer to cut the deficit to 5-2. Michael Cunningham pinch hit with two outs and hit a double to right center. Gonzales followed up with a single to right filed. Santos came up to bat representing the tying run. He reached base on a fielder's choice but the Pioneers got the final out on the force play to second.

On the Mound

 

  • Gary Grosjean started game one and improved his record to 3-2 on the season in the win. He went six innings, threw seven strike outs and gave up four runs.
  • Justice Naraghi pitched three innings in relief to earn the save. He did not give up a run and tossed a pair of strikes.
  • Ryan Gibson came in relief for the Pioneers and drew the loss in game one.
  • Tyler Franks started game two and pitched the entire game. After giving up five hits and five runs in the first two innings, Franks settled down and only allowed one more hit the rest of the way. He threw a career high seven strikeouts in the loss.
  • Garrison Fink pitched a complete game in game two for the Pioneers.
