BSB | Gators Fall Short of Come from Behind Win

SAN MARCOS — The San Francisco State baseball team fell 15-12 to Cal State San Marcos to finish with a series split. Down by 12 runs in the final inning, the Gators scored nine runs to cut the deficit to three but a strikeout with two outs ended the comeback bid.

  • SF State falls to 18-26 and 13-23 in CCAA action while Cal State San Marcos improves to 15-31 and 11-25 in the CCAA.
  • Daniel Santos matched his season high of four hits going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. He also had a run, an RBI and a hit by pitch.
  • Jo Bynum's home run was his first career homer.
  • Kody Gardner, who pinch hit in the ninth, went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
  • The Gators' pitching staff gave up 15 hits and four walks.

How It Happened 


An unearned run scored in the bottom of the first for the Cougars. Cal State San Marcos increased its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth scoring six runs off five hits. The Gators finally got on the board when Jo Bynum swung on the first pitch for a home run. Down 8-1 heading into the seventh, the Gators added two more runs when Sammy Gonzales brought a runner in with a double and Santos followed up with an RBI from his fourth hit of the game. The Gators allowed eight runs to score in the eighth, putting them at a 15-3 disadvantage going into the ninth. Gardner came in to pinch hit with one out and hit an RBI single to score the Gators first run of the inning. With bases loaded, Nick Upstill drew a hit by pitch to bring in another runner. After a pitching change, Justin Clark hit a single to left field to bring in two more runs.
   Gavin Mancha drew a HBP RBI, Antonio Nanez got the second out with a sac fly and Luke O'Brien plated two more runners with a double. Gardner singled to center to score O'Brien but the Gators' fortune ran out with a strikeout at the plate with the next at bat.

  • Nathan Shinn went five innings in the loss, giving up seven hits and allowing seven runs with six being earned. He also tossed five strikeouts.
  • Mitch Hofer and Mario Vargas did not allow an earned run in relief. Hofer had an unearned run scored against him.
  • Ethan Remmers and Andrew Silva each gave up four hits. Remmers allowed four runs while Silva allowed two.

The Gator's season finale will take place at home this week at Maloney Field against Cal State LA.
