DENVER — The San Francisco State men's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and played to a 2-2 tie at MSU Denver on Friday night at the Assembly Athletic Complex in both teams' season opener.
- New for 2022, overtime has been eliminated for regular season matches, meaning if a game is tied after the regulation 90 minutes, it will end in a tie. Previously, teams played two 10-minute overtime periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie.
- MSU Denver is picked to finish tied for seventh of 11 teams in the RMAC preseason coaches poll while the Gators were picked to finish ninth out of 12 teams in the CCAA preseason coaches poll.
- The Gators were outshot 17-9 but just 7-4 when it came to shots on goal.
- MSU Denver also held a 4-0 corner kick advantage.
Julio Gonzalez Ponce scored the Gators' first goal of the season in the 26th minute off of an assist from reigning CCAA Offensive Player of the Year Gustavo Ferarri. Ferrari notched another assist in the 31st minute when he found new teammate Johnny Kuwano. The Gators' early 2-0 lead was cut in half in the 42nd minute when Jona Votaw scored on a penalty kick. In the 67th minute, Adan Perez passed behind to Aaron Biggerstaff, who netted the equalizer inside the box.
Matias Herrera Fuentes faced 17 shots and made five saves for the Gators. Ross Miller made two saves and allowed two goals for the Roadrunners.
