SAN FRANCISCO — After posting its largest margin of victory since 1989 last week, the San Francisco State men's soccer team was shutout, the victim of a penalty kick in a 1-0 loss to Dominican on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
- SF State falls to 1-2-1 on the young season while Dominican has posted an impressive 4-1 record, all against CCAA programs.
- The Gators still hold a 7-2 advantage in the all-time series, though both Penguins victories have been the two most recent meetings.
- Dominican outshot SF State 15-5, including 8-1 shots on goal.
- Manuell Kariuki attempted SF State's only shot on goal in the 67th minute.
- The Penguins also held a 6-2 corner kick advantage.
The teams played a scoreless first half and the Gators defense kept the Penguins at bay through their first six shots on goal. However, a defensive miscue in the 86th minute proved costly. A Gators defender went to get in front of a pass on the right side but was whistled for handball inside the box. That set up a penalty kick for Brian Sanchez, who netted his team-leading third goal of the season. The Gators had a couple of corner kicks in the final five minutes but were not able to convert a set piece.
Matias Herrera Fuentes (1-2-1) made a season-high seven saves but was unable to stop the penalty kick. Dominican's Alejandro Reyes registered one save and earned his first shutout of the season.
SF State hosts Hawai'i Hilo in the Gators' home opener on Wednesday, September 14 at noon. The match will be broadcast on the CCAA Network with live stats available at sfstategators.com. Updates will also be available on Twitter at @sfstate_msoc.
