SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season and defeated Academy of Art 1-0 Sunday afternoon at CCSF Soccer Field. The Gators were aggressive on offensive and finally found the back of the net in the 71st minute when
Alexa Avelar took the feed from
Alyna Flores to score.
- The Gators improve to 1-3 overall while the Urban Knights fall to 0-5.
- SF State held a 27-4 shot advantage, including 12-2 shots on goal.
- Averlar's goal was her first of the season while Flores' assist was her first of her career.
- The Gators' defense limited ART U to one corner kick.
The Gators looked to score early, but could not capitalize on opportunities. At the 23 minute mark, the Gators made five shot attempts with three on goal in less than two minutes. Near the end of the first half, they had two back-to-back free kick opportunities to set up a goal but neither were able to make it in the net.
At the 71st minute, the Gators finally broke through when Flores found Avelar in front of the net and crossed it to her from the left side. Avelar headed it in to the right side of the net to put the Gators up 1-0. The defense held up the rest of the game, only allowing one shot from ART U after the goal.
Marcella Salyer (1-3) made two saves and only faced four shots in her first win of the season. Alicia Calderon had 11 saves for ART U and gave up the lone goal of the match.
"Every season has its challenges and getting over the hump with the first one is always the biggest one," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "We had some opportunities today to get a bunch of people on the field, finding those puzzle pieces I talked about before. Things are starting to come together."
The Gators will play their third PacWest team in a row when they travel to Concordia University Irvine Wednesday, September 14 for a 3:30 p.m. game. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com with live video provided by CUI. Live updates will also be provided on Twitter at @sfstate_wsoc.
