SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 non-conference to Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at Cox Stadium.
- SF State (2-4) has lost its last five meetings with the Seawolves (4-1-1), who are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II women's soccer poll. All five meetings have been by two goals.
- The Seawolves outshot the Gators 8-5. All eight Seawolves shots were on goal while the Gators placed three attempts on frame.
- SSU attempted two corner kicks while SF state attempted one.
The Seawolves scored once each half. The Seawolves took the lead late in the first half on Ashley Frye's shot from Lexi Zandonella-Arasa in the 36th minute. SSU doubled its leads in the 49th minute when Zandonella-Asasa scored off of a pass from Andrea Lozano.
Kylie Tone (1-1), who picked up her first win of the season earlier in the week, got the start in goal for SF State. The freshman made six saves but took the loss. Phoebe Barnes (3-1-1) picked up the win with three saves and a clean sheet.
"Tough loss today against the [defending] regular-season conference champion. We played very well in the first half, the second half got a little dicey," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "We're still sorting out the puzzle, I think the center back pieces have come together a bit. We're looking forward to our last non-conference match at Dominican."
It's a busy week ahead for the Gators, who first head across the Golden Gate Bridge to Dominican on Tuesday, September 20 for a 4 p.m. match. Then, they return home as CCAA play begins. They'll open conference play on Friday, September 23 at 3 p.m. versus Cal Poly Humboldt, followed by a 2 p.m. match versus Chico State on Sunday, September 25.
