SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at Dominican on Tuesday afternoon in the Gators' final non-conference match of the season.
- New for 2022, overtime has been eliminated for regular season matches, meaning if a game is tied after the regulation 90 minutes, it will end in a tie. Previously, teams played two 10-minute overtime periods in a sudden-victory (golden goal) format, and if neither team scored, the game ended in a tie.
- The two teams have now met four times. SF State (2-4-1) holds a 2-0-2 record versus the Penguins (2-2-3).
- The Gators held a 14-5 shot advantage, including 8-3 on goal.
- Dominican held a 5-3 corner kick advantage. Each team's goal came off of a set piece.
The Gators defense did not allow a shot in the first half but the two teams played to a scoreless intermission. The Gators tallied eight first-half shots and were yet to find the back of the net. That led to a frustrating set piece in the 49th minute when Dominican's Tanya Bills sent a corner kick from the left side to Jackie Lancaster for the 1-0 Dominican lead. The Gators answered quickly though in the 53rd minute. Alyna Flores played a ball from the midfield ahead to Lexi Wright, who got the ball down into the box for Alexa Avelar. A Dominican defender was able to kick the ball out but Julia Hagedorn connected with Brynn Reyes for a header that bounced past a diving Angelina Hert for the equalizer.
Marcella Salyer made the start in goal for SF State. She played 53 minutes and allowed the Dominican goal. Kylie Tone (1-1-1) played the remaining 36 minutes and also made one save en route to the draw. Hert (1-0-3) made seven saves for Dominican.
"Positive tie on the road today. We obviously would've liked to get the win but the quality of play was exceptional and the rotations were really, really good," said Head Coach John DeMartini. "Some of the puzzle pieces have all come together. Heading into a tough conference schedule, I think we're ready to roll."
