SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team seemed poised to play to a third consecutive draw on Sunday at Cox Stadium but a late goal by visiting Chico State handed the Gators a 1-0 CCAA loss.
- Chico State improves to 5-1-2 overall and 2-0 in CCAA action while the Gators fall to 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in CCAA play.
- Both teams attempted seven shots. Chico State placed six of theirs on frame while the Gators had three shots on goal.
- SF State held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
After a scoreless first half, things got interesting when the teams traded shots in the 64th minute. Susanna Garcia had a dangerous shot during a scrum off of a corner kick but had the ball gobbled up by
Marcella Salyer. The Gators countered but
Alexa Avelar's shot at the other end of the field was saved by Emma Hofmann. In the 81st minute, Avelar played the ball up to
Carissa Capinpin, who sent the ball across to
Alyna Flores, bent Flores' shot bent a touch too much and banged off the left post. Seconds later, Samantha Shin put a shot on goal but Emma Hofmann lept up for the Wildcats save. The Wildcats broke through in the 85th minute when Piper Matson found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Marcella Salyer (1-4-2) made five saves but allowed the Wildcats goal in the loss for the Gators. Hofmann (5-1-2) earned the victory with three saves.
