TURLOCK, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team worked out of early trouble and
Denis Vezina found the back of the net in the 28th minute to lift the Golden Gators to a 1-0 road victory on Friday night at Stanislaus State.
- SF State moves to 3-2-4 overall and 1-0-2 in CCAA play while the host Warriors slip to 4-3-3 and 1-2 in CCAA action.
- SF State recorded its third consecutive shutout. Goalkeeper Matias Herrera Fuentes now has four this season and six for his career.
- The Warriors were credited with 15 total shots, and eight on goal, while the Gators attempted eight shots, four on goal.
- Stan State held a 5-0 corner kick advantage but was unable to capitalize.
- Friday's match was physical with the two teams combining for 28 fouls and three yellow cards.
The Warriors caught a break early in the fourth minute but Herrera Fuentes fended off the early scare. The Gators were whistled for a foul in the left side of the box, which set up a penalty kick attempt for Daniel Gomez. However, he went left and Herrera Fuentes dove to his right for the stop and the Gators quickly cleared the ball to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.
In the 28th minute,
Johnny Kuwano dished a ball through the defense to
Emerson Trujillo, who had his shot blocked. His shot richocheted hard and back to the top of the box, where
Denis Vezina took a big swing for the putback.
SF State took a 1-0 lead into halftime and kept their opponent at bay the rest of the way for the team's fourth shutout of the season.
Matias Herrera Fuentes (2-2-3) made six saves and lowered his goals against average to .71. Robby Rosas (3-3-2) made three saves and was charged with the loss for the Warriors.
"Great way to start our road trip. This was a very tough environment with the travel and heat. Our team dug deep and did a great job grinding out the win," said Head Coach Pedro Osório. "The work ethic and commitment from top to bottom was exceptional and we were rewarded with the result. Hopefully we can keep that going and extend our shutout streak on Sunday."
