SAN FRANCISCO - The San Francisco State women's basketball team got a strong conference win over Cal Poly Humboldt at Main Gym Saturday evening.
Mya Blake led the Gators with 24 points and SF State made key baskets at the line to take ta 59-56 win.
- Gators improve to 7-7 on the season and 3-5 in the CCAA while the Lumberjacks' fall to 6-6 and 4-4 in conference.
- Blake's 24 points matches her career high. She has scored 20+ points in four games this season.
- Samaria Velazquez made key plays on both ends of the field,finishing the game with six rebounds, five assists, five points and four steals.
- The Lumberjacks had the edge in rebounds 43-34.
- Gators clipped .391 percent from the field.
Neither team started well in the first quarter. Both teams shot under .300 percent from the field and the Gators turned the ball over four times. An 11-0 run in the top of the second quarter put the Gators up 18-12. Blake accounted for eight of the points in the run. Humboldt came back and both teams exchanged leads for the latter part of the quarter. Down 29-28 with seconds to go,
Jolene Armendariz launched a buzzer beater three to take the lead but the shot was waived off and the Gators took a one-point deficit into the locker room.
After a slow start to the third quarter, the Gators found a spark. A three from Armendariz retook the lead for the Gators and started a 7-0 run.
Trailing the majority of the fourth quarter, the Lumberjacks retook the lead 56-55 with 1:26 remaining. The Gators went 3-for-4 at the line on their next two possessions while Humboldt could not score a basket to stay ahead of the Gators. With five seconds left and up 58-56, Blake was sent to the line. She made the first, missed the second and Velazquez corralled the ball as time expired on the clock.
