SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Down 2-0 at the half, the San Francisco State men's soccer team rallied with a goal just after halftime but gave up three late goals in a 5-1 loss at Cal State San Marcos on Sunday.
- The Gators slip to 3-7-2 overall and to 1-4-1 in CCAA action. They now find themselves five points out of playoff contention. The schedule doesn't get much easier as SF State will face three of the conference's top four teams in its final five matches.
- The Cougars move to 6-5-2 overall and are currently in fifth place in the CCAA at 3-2-1.
- Emerson Trujllo notched his third goal of the season. Julio Gonzalez Ponce assisted and leads the team with 11 points.
- Cal State San Marcos outshot the Gators 14-5, including 8-2 on goal.
- Both teams attempted three corner kicks.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals in the 11th minute and again in the 23rd minute.
SF State bounced back with a goal from Emerson Trujillo in the 48th minute. Gonzalez Ponce dribbled through traffic in the right side and into the box, then chipped a ball into the front of the goal mouth, where Trujillo headed it in on the left side to the near post.
However, the Gators couldn't come up with the equalizer and the contest got away when Cal State San Marcos struck for a pair of goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes. Curtis Collazos, who came off of the bench for the Cougars, added his second goal of the day in the 82d minute to make it 5-1.
Fernando Escobedo Guzman (2-4) made three saves and allowed all five Cougars goals. Jesus Mentado allowed one goal and made one save en route to the win for the Cougars. Tony Flores manned the Cougars net for the final nine minutes and did not see a shot.
