CHICO, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's soccer team saw its comeback bid fall short on Friday night in a 2-1 loss to Chico State at University Stadium.
- SF State falls to to 3-11-2 and 2-6-1 (7 points) in CCAA action. With the top six teams already tallying 15 or more points, SF State will be unable to match that total and has been eliminated from CCAA Tournament contention. The Wildcats, tied for third place with 16 points, improve to 10-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in CCAA play.
- Freshman Renee Davis netted her second goal of the season and is one of four Gators with a pair of goals. Ten different Gators have scored a goal in 2023.
- Chico State outshot SF State 18-5, including 14-3 on goal.
- Both teams attempted four corner kicks apiece.
A Wildcats goal in the 31st minute was the difference in the first half. A free kick resulted in a Summer Baron shot that found the back right of the net. Cheyenne Dohan looked to tie the game just before the half in the 44th minute but had her shot saved. The Gators got a corner kick and Kylee Medin fired off a shot that went wide right.
Gators goalkeeper Kylie Tone held the Wildcats back with two saves in the first three minutes of the second half but Chico State doubled its lead in the 52nd minute. The Wildcats threw the ball in, and Piper Matson and Summer Baron connected with Hannah Pieri for the goal.
SF State pulled to back within one goal in the 80th minute when Davis scored. Cece Hallock crossed a ball into the box from the left side. The ball was headed by a Wildcats defender and deflected by another but Davis was left open for the finish.
After that, the Gators had a corner kick but never got off another shot before time expired.
Tone made a career-high 12 saves but left with the loss. Wildcats goalkeeper Emma Hoffman picked up the win and was credited with one save and one goal allowed.
