SEASIDE, Calif. — The San Francisco State women's basketball team opened up the season Friday afternoon, dropping their first contest to Simon Fraser 71-56 at the Kelp Bed.
- Simon Fraser was selected to finish fourth in the GNAC and picks up its first win of the season.
- The Gators started Alexsandra Alverado, Sage Bridges-Bey, Imani Felix, Samaria Velazquez and Brilonnie Bell in the season opener. Only Velazquez averaged 20+ minutes for the Gators last season.
- Six players in total made their Gator debut. Kierra Johnson, Nyana Asiasi, Audrey Gonzalez Alvarez and Perséas Gioukaris all came off the bench.
- Alverado led the team with 16 points, followed by Bridges-Bey with 13.
- The Gators were outrebounded 48-39
- Simon Fraser's Gemma Cutler went 12-for-15 and scored 26 points while also adding seven rebounds and five blocks.
The Gators struggled to contain Cutler in the first quarter who went 5-for-5 with 15 points. Down 21-11 heading into the second quarter, both teams were cold for the first two minutes before a three-point basket from
Alexsandra Alvarado finally ended the scoring drought. The Gators would only score one more basket in the second quater while Simon Fraser went on to outscore the Gators 10-3.
After Simon Fraser extended their lead by as much as 21 in the third quarter, the Gators slowly chipped away the lead. Bridges-Bay launched a jumper to cut the deficit to 13-points with 4:11 left in the third. The Gators would get as close as ten points from the lead but were unable to comeback from the early deficit.
The Gators return to Monterey Bay for a match-up with a couple of Pac West Schools next weekend. Game one will be against Dominican on November 17 at 5 pm. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com with updates also available on X at @sfstate_wbb.
