SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 79-66 loss to Academy of Art on Saturday evening inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.
- Both teams move to 1-1 on the young season.
- Jailen Daniel-Dalton led the Gators with a double-double, going for 18 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late. Jonah Roth added 10 points, and CJ Bellamy, Tyjean Burrell, and Devon Jackson all chipped in eight points apiece in the loss. Bellamy's all came in the first half.
- Three Urban Knights reached double digits, led by Isaiah Williams, who paced all players with 21 points. Latrell Williams added 16 points and Jamal Fuller had 11 points in the win.
- The Gators simply couldn't get the ball to fall like it had in the first half. SF State built a 38-34 halftime lead thanks to 44.4 percent (12-of-27) shooting but went ice cold in the second half, shooting just 24.2 percent (8-of-33). Conversely, the Urban Knights went 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field for the game, including 50 percent (14-of-28) in the second half.
- SF State outrebounded ART U 42-30 overall, including 23-10 in the first half, resulting in nine second chance points. However, ART U had the edge in the second half, 20-19.
- Turnovers again proved costly for the Gators as they committed 23, compared to 11 by the Urban Knights.
The Gators trailed 9-5 early.
Jonah Roth made both of his free throws out of the media timeout, and a few possessions later,
CJ Bellamy knocked the ball loose from Rodney Munson on a fast break attempt.
Tyjean Burrell recovered the loose ball and Daniel-Dalton got into the paint to tie it at 9-9. The Gators got a stop and Oden hit Bellamy for a transition three that put the Gators up three.
With just under 10 minutes to go in the half and the shot clock dwindling,
Tyjean Burrell buried a three that put the Gators up six. The Urban Knights eventually took the lead, 28-27 with 3:30 to go in the half, after back-to-back Jamal Fuller buckets and a sloppy inbound pass that led to a Williams jumper. The Gators took the lead right back on pair of Daniel-Dalton free throws but another poor SF State inbound pass led to a Williams steal and Latrell Williams and-one for a 33-30 Urban Knights lead with just under two minutes to go in the half.
Devon Jackson kept it a one-point game with a pair of free throws, then drove the lane and hit a turnaround jumper to put the Gators back up one. Williams tied it again with the first of two free throws but the Gators went into the half with a four-point lead thanks to layups from Roth and Daniel-Dalton.
SF State's lead held into the second half until the 15-minute mark when Jamal Fuller dunked it in for a one-point Urban Knights lead. The Gators grabbed the lead back on a Jackson layup but the Urban Knights went on a 15-5 run as the Gators went just 2-for-5 over a four-minute span with all five points coming from Daniel-Dalton.
The deficit grew to 14 with just over four minutes to play. The Gators cut it to nine on a Dalton three-pointer with under three to go and an Oden three-pointer from in front of the Gators bench cut the lead to eight with under a minute to go. The Gators were forced to foul, resulting in ART U free throws down the stretch.
The Gators next head to Fresno Pacific for a non-conference game on Wednesday, November 15 at Fresno Pacific. Live stats will be available at sfstategators.com with updates also available on X at @sfstate_mbb.
