How it Happened

Neither team led by more than one possession throughout the first quarter. A made free throw by Alvarado gave the Gators a three-point lead with a little over two minutes to go but the Sunbirds made a couple of free throws and a buzzer-beat three to close out the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 17-14. The Sunbirds would stretch their lead to five with 6:20 remaining but back-to-back baskets from Alvarado tied things up again and buckets from Sage Bridges-Bay and Brilonnie Bell gave the Gators a 29-25 lead. The Sunbirds reclaimed the lead and went into the locker room up 35-32.

The Sunburds took their biggest lead yet up 42-35 with 5:28 remaining. The Gators climbed back, tied things up late and went into the final frame trailing by one after a made free throw. A lay-up plus the and-one basket from Bridges-bay put the Gators up 54-48 for their largest lead of the game. The Sunbirds climbed back and used a 6-0 run to swing momentum their way and take a 64-59 lead with 3:33 remaining. The Gators, who were in foul trouble, gave the Sunbirds several opportunities at the free-throw line which they capitalized on. FPU went 11-for-15 including 8-for-10 with under three minutes to go to preserve the lead.
