SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's basketball team ran into a tough No. 4 Cal State San Bernardino squad in an 86-67 loss on Saturday afternoon at Coussoulis Arena.
- The Gators slipped to 5-4 overall and 1-3 CCAA while the nationally-ranked Coyotes improved to 7-1 overall and sit in third place in the CCAA at 3-1.
- SF State led early but the Coyotes led the majority of the game.
- Three Gators reached double digits. Jailen Daniel-Dalton and Jonah Roth each scored 15 points. Alex Gilat added a season-high 11 points in the loss.
- Robby Robinson scored a game-high 18 points for CSUSB. Sedrick Altman and Christopher Mitchell each scored 16 points, and LeAndrew Knight added 15 points. Former Gator Jalen Flanagan scored nine points.
- CSUSB's offense was efficient on 58.1 percent (36-of-62) shooting, although they were just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from deep, including 0-for-6 in the first half.
- The Coyotes also held a 41-31 rebounding advantage. Daniel-Dalton led all players with 10 for his third double-double of the season.
The Gators struck first. Roth was fouled and sank free throws but Flanagan answered with an and-one at the other end. The Gators went back ahead on
Tyjean Burrell's layup but that's the last SF State would lead. Twenty seconds later, Christopher Mitchell's layup put CSUSB up for good. The deficit grew to six, though the Gators tied the game at 12-12 on another Burrell layup. After a Roth layup, SF State trailed by one with 3:28 to go ibut the Coyotes closed the half on a 10-2 run for a 38-29 halftime lead.
SF State opened the half with a couple of stops and scored on another Roth layup but a 13-6 Coyotes run grew the deficit to 51-37. The deficit grew to as much as 20 before time expired.
The Gators next head to the Big Island Holiday Classic hosted by Hawai'i Hilo for three games.
