LA MIRADA, Calif. — The San Francisco State softball team split its a non-conference doubleheader with Biola on Friday afternoon at Freedom Field. The Gators took game one 1-0 and dropped the nightcap 4-1.
- Both teams entered at 4-1 and depart the doubleheader at 5-2.
- Kaitlyn Maddux, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, won game one and moved to 3-0. In doing so, she lowered her ERA to .67.
- Kai DeLeon had three hits on the day. The sophomore, who finished 2022 on a 10-game hit streak, has recorded a hit in every game this season, bringing her hit streak to 17 games.
- SF State swiped two bases in the first game but did not steal a base in game two, snapping the Gators' eight-game streak with a stolen base dating back to the final series of last season.
Game 1
- The Gators stranded a runner in every inning but finally broke through in the fifth. With a pair of runners in scoring position, Kira Nilson grounded out to second. That plated DeLeon, who drew a one-out walk, moved into scoring position on Marley Gonzales' single, and advanced to third on a passed ball.
- Maddux struck out four, walked three, and scattered five hits in a complete-game shutout.
- Kayla Bousquette allowed just two hits and three walks in four innings but took a no-decision. Jennifer Morinishi (1-1) was charged with her first loss of the season. She worked three innings and gave up three hits, two walks, and the run.
Game 2
- In game two, the Eagles took the lead in the second when Kaitlyn Hawkins doubled home Bridgette Trujillo all the way from first.
- The Gators answered in the third. DeLeon singled, moved up on a Gonzales sac bunt and to third on a groundout, then scored when Teya Vincent bounced a single between first baseman Abie Nowak and the bag.
- Biola grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the third with a pair of long balls. Morinishi homered to right field on a 2-1 pitch and the Eagles extended the lead to 4-1 on Raylene Roybal's two-out, two-run homer to right center.
- Brooklyn Heffernan tossed her second complete game of the season but dropped to 1-2 on the young season. She allowed four runs on seven hits. She struck out five and walked two.
- Roybal (3-0) also struck out five in the complete-game win. She scattered four hits and a walk.
The Gators head back to Irvine on Sunday, February 12 to take on No. 19 Concordia in a noon doubleheader. A live stream and live stats will be provided by the Golden Eagles.
