WBB | Gators Comeback Against the Yotes Falls Short

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The San Francisco State women's basketball team fell to Cal State San Bernardino 64-58 Saturday afternoon at the Den. The Gators, who fell behind early against the Yotes, put together a strong second half but could not dig themselves out of the early deficit.

  • The Gators fall to 7-17 on the season and to 3-15 in the CCAA. The Yotes improve to 12-12 and 7-11 in the CCAA.
  • Three Gators scored in double-digits: Jolene Armendariz (17), Muirae Gomez (16) and Mya Blake (10). Gomez was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and added 13 rebounds for a double-double.
  • SF State was a perfect 16-for-16 at the free throw line, doing this feat for the first time since 2015.
  • The Gators shot 22.2 percent from three compared to the Yotes' 42.9.
  • The Yotes scored 20 points in the paint compared to the Gators' nine.

How it Happened



After starting with a 8-4 lead, the Yotes outscored the Gators 25-4 over the course of 9:12 minutes. After a jumper by Armendariz cut the Yotes lead to 29-14 with four minutes remaining in the second quarter, both teams' went cold for over two minutes. A couple of made free throw kept the Gators in the game as they trailed 34-20 after two frames.

The Gators had their best third quarter of the season in an attempt to erase the deficit. SF State went 8-for-11 from the field and shot 72.7 percent. With a pair of made free throws from Taimane Lesa-Hardee, the Gators cut the deficit to single digits and trailed 48-39 heading into the final frame.

A three-point basket from Armendariz made it a five-point game with 1:51 to go. The Yotes responded with a three of their own to take a 63-56 lead with 1:21 remaining. The Gators missed a pair of baskets during this stretch and fell short of the comeback.
