SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team opened up home action at Maloney Field Friday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Colorado State University, Pueblo. The match-up featured good pitching on both sides. The Gators used a three-run rally in the eighth to take a lead they would hold onto.
- The Gators improve to 4-1 while CSU Pueblo sits at 0-4.
- SF State had five hits on the day with four of them coming in the eighth.
- Sammy Gonzales was the only Gator to hit for an extra base, a double in the eighth.
- The Gators only earned one free base as Justin Clark drew a walk.
- SF State has now won its home opener ever season since 2019.
The Thunder Wolves got on the board first in the top of the fourth. An error on the catcher allowed the batter to reach first base safely after he struck out, allowing Trey Vasquez to reach third. A bunt on the next play allowed the runner on third to score. A hit by pitch loaded up the runners with two outs but Eglite tossed a strikeout to end the inning.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth,
AJ Schrader hit a one-out single.
Cole Thompson came into pinch run for Schrader.
Matt Sugden singled to advance Thompson and a fielder's choice allowed Thompson to reach third.
Sammy Gonzales doubled to bring Thompson home. With the game tied 1-1,
Michael Cunningham hit the play to left field, allowing pinch runner
Antonio Nanez to score one run safely and Gonzales to slide home for the second run.
After an error got the lead-off runner on in the top of the ninth, the Gators got a ground out for the first out. The following batter was walked but the Gators ended the game with a double-play.
- Jordyn Eglite made his 2023 home debut on the mound for the Gators. After a slow start, he finished the game with seven strikeouts, two walks, two hits and no earned runs. With 152 career strikeouts, Eglite moves into third all-time.
- Justice Naragahi earned the win in relief while Mario Vargas came on for the save.
- Zach Pratt went scoreless through seven innings with seven strikeouts, one hit and one walk for Pueblo. Jacob Petersheim drew the loss for Pueblo.
