SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team won a convincing 11-2 conference opener over Cal State East Bay Friday afternoon at Maloney Field. After the Pioneers scored a run in the first and second innings, the Gators scored nine unanswered runs to take command of the game.
- The Gators improve to 8-1 and open conference 1-0 while the Pioneers fall to 6-5 and 0-1 in conference.
- SF State recorded 16 hits and 10 RBIs, the most at home this season.
- Gavin Haimovitz had a game high four RBIs. He and Nick Upstill both went 3-for-5 at the plate.
- Daniel Santos had the first home run at home for the Gators this season.
- Sammy Gonzales' triple was the team's eighth and most in the CCAA so far this season.
A ground out scored the first runner for Cal State East Bay at the top of the first. With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, Haimovitz singled to left to plate the Gator's first two runs of the game. Another ground out allowed the runner at third to score for the Pioneers and tie the game 2-2 in the second. The Gators had their biggest scoring output of the day in the bottom of the inning.
Caleb Chance went for a bunt and arrived on base safely to bring in
Matt Sugden. A sac bunt moved Chance to third and an RBI single from Santos plated Chance. Haimovitz took advantage of another bases loaded situation and plated two more runs.
Up 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Santos hit a solo home run over the left field wall.
The Gators hit three insurance runs in the seventh inning. Chance and Gonzales hit back to back RBI singles. Gonzales got himself in a pickle and was eventually tagged out but danced around long enough for Chance to score the third run of the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Upstill hit a one-out single to left. He made it all the way to third and
Kody Gardner put the ball in play for the Gators to score their 11th run of the game.
- Jordyn Eglite pitched through six innings to record his first win of the season. He threw three strikeouts and gave up two walks, two runs and four hits.
- Justice Naraghi came in relief and pitched three-innings to earn his first save of the season. He threw three scoreless frames, giving up no hits, one walk and tossed a strikeout.
- Ethan Brodsky was credited with the loss.
